Spaces that people go to everyday often have more of a meaning than the literal reason that they are there for. Highland Market for example attracts a large amount of students at the University of Arizona and for a variety of different reasons. Every person that walks into the market has a different interpretation of the place in some way. Most people probably never think anything of the different interpretations there could be of Highland Market because it such a simple place, but in reality people use it for so many different reasons. People often overlook the interpretations of Highland and the other meanings it has.
The Highland Market outdoor seating area represents many aspects of what the market does for the people it markets too. The outdoor seating area is an area where people gather to eat the food that they just purchased or sometimes even to socialize. Due to it being outdoor there is not a limit to the amount of people you can have at one table, as well as noise not being an issue, even though the inside of Highland Market is already a loud place. Also when sitting outdoors people can get more of a feel that they are just with the party that they came with and not necessarily in the high traffic area of Highland. This outdoor area could be interpreted in two different ways. Where one group of people might choose to sit outside because they would like a quiet place to study, others may gather outside to eat in order to have no limits to noise. The reason that there is no people in this picture is to represent the simplicity of the area and that such a simple area attracts so many different people. The lost part of this picture that some one might not pay attention too in the background is inside the store by looking through the windows. That represents the area that the customers just left and the options that they had while inside the store. While the outdoor seating area of Highland Market looks as simple as it does especially when there is nobody at it, it is a prime factor of the market.

This part of Highland symbolizes the opposite of the outdoor seating area but also contains other aspects of the market. The modern looking inside of Highland Market gives students a fun feel and atmosphere compared to the other food options on campus. The indoor seating area is a more public area because of the amount of people normally at the market. Also the inside seating area sends off more of a message that the people were more there to eat a specific meal rather than to gather for a social reasons. The cash register part of this picture represents that not at people are there for a meal or to socialize with friends. Some people are there to just get in and grab a snack or something small then being on their way.  The background of this picture that shows the grill shows the primary source for food at Highland Market and the reason the majority of people go to Highland rather than the Park Student Union. The employees shown in the picture depicts are the hard work that goes into running the market the way Highland is ran. The way that Highland is managed feels more like an official market rather than just a school ran place where a students meal plan can be used. The kid at the register in the backpack represents all the people that go to Highland not just for a meal or social reasons. Whereas the table represent people coming more for a particular meal. The inside of Highland appeals to so many different people and has so many different aspects to it.
Highland Market is hectic places at most times considering the popularity of it and because of it’s grill being open until 3:00 A.M. I interpret the behind the counter part of this picture as endless possibilities of food. Whether somebody wants an enormous breakfast burrito, a grilled cheese, or maybe even just a sandwich of their choice for lunch, it is all there.  You can even get pasta at Highland. The employees behind the counter represent all the effort they put out to make the market run smoothly. Not only do the employees deal with a large number of people daily some of them work until 3:00 A.M. on the weekends. Most people would hate that job but these workers are doing it so that other people can still enjoy their delicious Highland burritos. The lost part of this picture is the salad bar. The salad bar represents health because we all know the food at Highland is definitely not the best for your body. The salad bar contains a variety of salads as well as fruit if your feeling heathy one day or just want a little snack to hold you over. Some people might interpret this part of Highland as a place where they eat regularly for lunch and dinner, whereas some might only go to Highland for the infamous burritos in the wee hours of the morning. The employees are the key part of the this picture because not only are they students serving students but they do a great job at it and keep Highland Market running as smoothly as possible.
This picture at Highland I think shows a lot about the people. In this picture there is so much variety and so many different reasons people could be purchasing a drink. On the left there is the energy drinks where one might be buying one of those to pull a late night study session, where on the far right we have the Powerade for someone who might have came to directly from the Rec Center to replenish themselves. All of these drinks could be interpreted in many ways, where someone might be getting a Coke to go along with their meal another kid might be getting a Coke for the pre-game before they go out at night. Also, there are the juices, people normally buy juices as a healthy option instead of soda that also tastes good. I interpret the juice part of this picture as another breakfast item to go with a breakfast burrito for all the burrito lovers out there. Or there is the simple option of just getting any of these drinks just for a thirst quencher. Depending on what drink a person buys someone can maybe tell what there feeling at the time. Where if I buy a Monster energy drink lo-carb someone might get the idea that I need energy because I have thing I need to do but I don’t want to get all the calories of a regular energy drink.  If I buy a Coke one can get the idea that a soda was what I was craving and Coke is the basic soda in my eyes. If I buy a minute-maid apple juice someone could it interpret it as me wanting a sweet drink that is better for you than a soda. This picture as a whole demonstrates the variety of things people can do with beverages.

Although many people have different interpretations of every space, sometimes spaces have a general interpretation that all people make when they are in that space. When thinking about it, it is interesting how the coolers filled with all sorts of different drinks can be interpreted by people in so many different ways. How a table can mean more than just a place to eat, and the employees more than just some one that makes the food or works the register. Every different area of Highland Market can be interpreted in a different way than its literal meaning people often just look right by that interpretation.
